I’m sitting here creating an About Me page, written by me.
What do I say about me, Chris Hatton?

This will be much easier if I write my “About Me” like I’m writing a letter to a friend!

So let’s be friends for a moment, and hopefully for a long time to come…

Here I go.

I have two dogs, Jiggs and Rocco.

I’m married and live at Lake Tahoe, CA. I have 5 children.

I drive a Ford F-250 flat bed that I bought from the US Forest Service. It looks like a giant granny apple as it rolls down the highway. I love my F-250. My family car (my wife’s car) is a Toyota Land Cruiser.

I have a nice home with a big green lawn and a small view of Lake Tahoe.
We travel frequently because our children are scattered across the states, from Arizona to Minnesota.

But all that stuff probably doesn’t matter to you and that’s not why you’re here.

By now you’re probably thinking..

How Do I Know If Your Stuff Is Any Good?

Well, the wisest thing to do is to just get some of my free stuff.

If you like it, you’ll probably like my coaching.

If you don’t like it, you won’t.

But now is the time where I think I’m supposed to tell you more about me relative to my authority and celebrity status, so here it goes:

I got my general contractor’s license back in 1990. Back then we didn’t have the internet. We had a thing called the Yellow Pages. That’s how we all advertised, if we even advertised at all.

Most of us didn’t advertise. I’m not sure why. Some silent code among us, I guess. “Don’t use the Yellow Pages! They’re a rip off. It’s all about referrals anyway”. 

We all did business by referrals. The more referrals, the more bad ass you were! The thing I would say to my subs and fellow contractors was, “I just got a bunch of referrals. I’m gonna be slammed all Summer!” 

(Cause I’m that good, I thought to myself... I just hope I get more referrals come Fall...)

“My business runs off referrals, my work is my advertising”! I would say as I walked away, referral patting myself on my back.

Then the internet arrived. Some of us took a little longer to build our website, but most of us had a website. It was kinda like an “online business card” so it wasn’t given much cred by most contractors. My website didn’t get me any business! And most of the contractors I knew weren’t getting business from their websites either. So! Yes! Referrals were still the way. At least, that what we all thought.

I relied on the referral system for about 26 years and it provided a good living that came with uncertainty, stress, and inconsistent work. Sometimes there were weeks that went by as I waited for the next referral. It's just the way it was. 

Then I decided to try different ways to find clients outside of my "referral network". I wanted consistent work and my guys wanted more work too.  

I joined HomeAdvisor, BuildZoom & Thumbtack because I thought these digital marketplaces would fill the gaps. I payed a "contractor web designer" a flat fee of $10,000 to build me a website (turned out he didn't know squat). I created a Facebook business page which I didn't know how to market correctly. Then I placed some "old school" ads in local publications and joined the local trade association. 

None of these new strategies worked! HomeAdvisor charged me several hundred up front and a referral fee for every lead provided. The leads were unqualified, expensive and non-exclusive! My website had no lead generation elements and the content was terrible. It's crazy how much of what you say can make or break your website. I had no clue of how to maximize Facebook. I didn't know how to take advantage of free Google listings and knew nothing about SEO or keyword strategy. 

I began to study marketing strategies for contractors.  I read books and spent thousands on courses, from copy writing and closing sales, to sales funnel website design and building. I found two mentors who changed my life. I even joined a $30,000 Elite Mastermind Group. 

I knew I could have a million dollar remodel business if I got shit dialed in.

I started applying these marketing strategies to my business. It took hard work but I was all in (obviously). In a few weeks I was getting new leads from people that weren’t referred to me by someone I had done work for. These leads quickly became projects.

In 8 months, I grossed $865,000 and my business kept growing! 10 months later I broke the million dollar mark! 

My life changed! I had a team. I started spending more time with family and friends. We began to vacation frequently. We bought property in Costa Rica. I bought an RV to travel America (I never thought I would be an RV'r).  I even bought a Harley Blackline. Then we  paid our second home off and I retired.

I decided I wanted to teach contractors how to grow their businesses by using the strategies I used to grow my business so rapidly.
